When someone searches "Shopify retainer" they usually mean one of three things: somebody to build, somebody to keep it working, or somebody to grow it. Our retainer cost guide covers the third. This is the page for development and support retainers, which are a different purchase with different failure modes.
Direct answer: A Shopify development retainer reserves developer hours every month for building and changing the store. A support retainer keeps the store working: fixes, small changes, updates, and a response time when something breaks. In the UK, support runs from a few hundred pounds a month, development retainers from about £2,000, and Plus partner retainers from £5,000 upwards. Buy one when the work is continuous. Pay per job when it is not.
Questions that bring people here
The three retainer shapes, side by side
| Shape | What it buys | Typical UK monthly (fees only) | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support / maintenance | Bug fixes, small theme and content changes, app updates, monitoring, a response-time promise | £400 to £1,500 | Hours quietly consumed by "quick questions"; no rollover |
| Development | A reserved block of developer time: features, integrations, theme work, Functions, performance | £2,000 to £8,000 | No backlog owner on your side, so the hours get spent on whatever was mentioned last |
| Plus partner retainer | Development plus architecture, checkout extensibility, B2B, multi-market, integrations, SLAs | £5,000 to £15,000 and beyond | Paying for senior availability while juniors do the tickets |
| Growth (for comparison) | Paid media, creative, reporting, optimisation | £750 to £6,000 and beyond | Commentary instead of decisions. Separate guide. |
Those are orientation bands from what we see quoted, not a price list. Your theme, app stack, number of markets and how much is custom move them more than anything else. The comparison number to hold in your head is a senior freelance Shopify developer at roughly £400 to £700 a day. Divide the retainer fee by that and you get the number of senior days you are notionally buying. If the answer is "four days" and the retainer promises twenty hours, someone is counting differently.
What a support retainer should include
- A named response time for "the site is broken" and a different one for "can you change this banner". If both are "within 48 hours" the retainer is a mailbox.
- App and theme update handling. Updates break things; somebody has to test after them.
- Basic monitoring: uptime, checkout, the two or three integrations that matter.
- A monthly note of what was done and what hours remain. Hours you cannot see are hours you have already lost.
- What is explicitly out of scope: new features, redesigns, data migrations, marketing. Those belong in a development scope or a project.
What a development retainer should include
- A backlog you own. The single biggest cause of wasted retainer hours is nobody on the merchant's side deciding what comes next, so the developer works on whatever was mentioned in the last call.
- Estimates before work, even rough ones. A retainer is not a licence to skip scoping.
- Staging and a release habit. Changes go to a theme copy or a development store, get checked, then ship.
- Access hygiene. Collaborator access under your ownership. Never hand over the store owner account.
- Rollover or redirection of unused hours. Ask before you sign, not after a light month.
"Retainer as a service" and "retainer programmes"
Some agencies productise the retainer: a fixed fee, a fixed menu, sold like a subscription. It is easier to buy and easier to compare. The trap is the menu boundary. The productised tier covers "up to 10 hours of theme changes", and the thing you actually need in month two is an integration that is not on the menu, so it becomes a project quote on top. Read the menu as a list of things you will not get for the fee.
Shopify Plus: when the retainer is genuinely needed
Plus does not create the need for a retainer by itself. Custom checkout, Shopify Functions, B2B catalogues, multi-market with different pricing, and ERP or WMS integrations do. Each of those is something that will need changing when Shopify changes, and Shopify changes. If you run two or more of them, a retainer with a senior person who knows your setup is cheaper than re-explaining it to a new freelancer every quarter.
What Plus does not remove is the operating work: the dead sizes, the ads outliving the stock, the morning list. That is a different job from development and it is the one we built for: Ralph for Shopify Plus.
When to pay per job instead
A stable theme, a modest app stack, and changes that arrive a few times a year: pay per job. Get a day rate or a fixed quote, keep a relationship with one developer so context is not lost, and put the money you would have spent on a retainer into a small emergency budget instead. Retainers earn their fee when the work is continuous, not when it is occasional and you are paying for reassurance.
A retainer buys availability. If you do not need availability every month, you are buying it for the months you do and donating the rest.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Who exactly does the work, and what is their seniority?
- What is the response time for an outage, in writing?
- Do unused hours roll over, and for how long?
- What is the notice period, and is there a minimum term?
- Where does support end and a project begin?
- Do we keep ownership of the theme code, the store account and any custom app?
Fog on two or more of those means the retainer will feel foggy in month three. The same test applied to growth retainers is in what a growth retainer actually buys, and the full cost picture including your own hours is in how much an ecommerce agency costs.
Questions people actually ask
What is a Shopify development retainer?
A monthly agreement that reserves a block of developer time for your store: theme changes, app integration, custom features, Shopify Functions on Plus, performance work. You pay whether or not you use every hour, in exchange for priority and a known cost.
What is a Shopify support retainer?
A lighter arrangement focused on keeping the store working: bug fixes, small content and theme tweaks, app updates, monitoring, and an answer within an agreed time when something breaks. It usually includes fewer hours than a development retainer and a response-time promise.
How much does a Shopify retainer cost per month in the UK?
Bands we see quoted, fees only: support and maintenance from about £400 to £1,500 a month for a small block of hours, development retainers from about £2,000 to £8,000, and Shopify Plus partner retainers from £5,000 up to well past £15,000 where there is multi-market or heavy custom work. A senior freelance Shopify developer's day rate in the UK is commonly £400 to £700, which is the number to compare against.
What does Shopify retainer as a service mean?
A productised retainer: a fixed monthly fee for a fixed menu of work, sold like a subscription rather than a bespoke scope. It is easier to buy and easier to outgrow. Read the menu carefully, because the things you actually need are often just outside it.
Do I need a Shopify Plus retainer?
Not because you are on Plus. You need one if you are running checkout extensibility, Functions, B2B, multi-market or a custom integration that somebody has to maintain. A Plus store with a stock theme and a handful of apps can pay per job like anyone else.
Do unused retainer hours roll over?
Only if the contract says so, and most do not. Ask for a rollover of at least one month, or for the right to redirect unused development hours into support work. A retainer with no rollover and a light month is just a donation.
shopify development retainer
A monthly block of developer time reserved for your store: theme changes, integrations, custom features, Functions on Plus. UK bands run from about £2,000 to £8,000 a month. Compare against a senior freelance day rate of £400 to £700.
shopify support retainer
A lighter arrangement to keep the store working: fixes, small changes, app updates, monitoring, and an answer within an agreed time when something breaks. From a few hundred pounds a month in the UK.
shopify developer retainer
The same thing as a development retainer: reserved developer hours each month. The questions that matter are who does the work, whether unused hours roll over, and where support ends and a project begins.
