When the ad features a size you cannot ship

Catalogue hygiene does not fix a try-on video of a dead UK 10. Creative is its own stock problem.

You fixed the catalogue. Dynamic ads look cleaner. Then a UGC try-on of Sand / UK 10 keeps spending the weekend because nobody mapped creative to variants. Catalogue truth and creative truth are different jobs.

Direct answer: If a static or UGC ad features a size or colour you cannot ship, pause or replace it. Meta will not do that for you. Tag featured variants on every live creative, check cover, and put a stock line in the brief so the next cut does not repeat the lie.

Why this bites harder than dashboards admit

People buy the story they see. A model in a 10 sells the 10. A flat lay of olive sells olive. When that variant is gone, you are not “still building brand”. You are paying for disappointment that arrives as comments, refunds, and softer conversion on everything else.

Dynamic product ads have a path through availability. Most creative does not. Treat UGC like a featured SKU list that can go OOS.

The Friday audit

  1. List ads with spend in the last 7 days.
  2. For each, write the size/colour/SKU the viewer thinks they can buy.
  3. Check Shopify against your paid buffer.
  4. Pause mismatches. Do not wait for the weekly brand meeting.
  5. Keep honest last-size stories only with caps and on-page truth.

If the list is long, you do not have a creative problem only. You have an ownership problem. See also ads when stock is thin.

Briefs that prevent the next mess

Add one ugly line to every creative brief: Featured variants + cover at brief time + kill rule. Designers and creators should not discover stock from angry comments.

Package thinking helps: offer, creative angles, landing, and stock in one pass (campaign packages). Lonely ads skip the stock line every time.

If you would not screenshot the PDP size picker next to the ad, do not ship the ad.

Dynamic vs static: stop mixing the cures

Fixing catalogue availability is necessary and not sufficient. A clean catalogue with a lying UGC cut still taxes trust. The full map sits in variant-level DPA OOS.

Ralph’s angle is the same desk: cover next to what is in flight, morning list that names the mismatch, human approval before pause packages ship. Not magic auto-editing of every Reel.

Worked example

Top UGC: creator in Sand UK 10. Sand 10 hits buffer. Sand 12 still deep. Team leaves the ad because “the product is in stock”. Conversion softens. Comments ask for the 10. Support burns an hour a day. The fix was a pause and a recut with 12s, not a new bid cap.

Production queue hygiene

When you commission UGC, ask for two colourways when you can. Banking a second angle is cheaper than emergency reshoots after a stockout. Put that in the creator brief next to the stock line.

Questions people actually ask

Does Meta stop a static ad when the size sells out?

No. Static and most UGC ads do not read your size curve. You pause or replace them.

Can I crop or edit instead of pausing?

Sometimes. If the story still implies the missing size or colour, pause. Honesty beats a clever crop.

Should last-size ads ever run?

Yes, if the page and creative tell the truth and you cap spend. Prospecting into silent last sizes buys returns.

Who owns the audit?

Whoever owns the ad account must own a stock note on featured variants. Unowned creatives rot.

If a sold-out size is the problem: Ralph reads every size against every campaign overnight, finds the ones still paying for an empty shelf, and stages the exclusion with a revert for restock day. You say yes. See Ralph · How Ralph handles out-of-stock sizes · Docs
